al-Ghūṭa - الغوطة

The G̲h̲ūṭa of Dimas̲h̲ḳ [q.v.] is the area of gardens and orchards which surrounds the former Umayyad capital below the gorges of Rabwa and which is made fertile by a close network of irrigation trenches fed by the Baradā [q.v.]. The G̲h̲ūṭa extends from the eastern slopes of Mount Ḳāsiyūn [q.v.] as far as the streams and the water brought in from the Baradā allow bushes to be grown. Beyond this, to the east, is the Mard̲j̲ , a region of pasture and wide stretches of arable land.2
