“[A] mountain three Arabian miles to the north-east of Mecca, often mentioned along with another mountain opposite, T̲h̲abīr [q.v.]. [...] Muḥammad is said to have been in the habit of spending a month each year in a cave on Ḥirāʾ engaged in taḥannut̲h̲, presumably some form of religious devotion, and to have been visited here by an angel [...].” 2
