“The name Ḥaḍramawt is applicable in its strictest sense to the deep
valley running parallel to the southern coast of Arabia from roughly 48° E. to 50° E.,
between precipitous walls rising to a high plateau (the Djol), which on the south
separates it from the narrow coastal plain and on the north from an arid tract merging
into the sand desert of the Empty Quarter of Arabia.” 3
