[A] town in the Hindu-Kus̲h̲ north of the main range in a mountain valley lying 8,480 feet above sea level, through which one of the most important roads between the lands of the Oxus watershed and the Indus leads; the town is therefore naturally important as a commercial centre and was important in the middle ages as a fortress also.2

وعبر النهر، وهو نهر جيحون، إلى مدينة بلخ فتملكها، ثم إلى الياميان (الباميان) فتملّكها، وأوغل في بلاد خراسان وعراق العجم. فثار عليه المسلمون في بلخ، وفي ما وراء النهر. فكرّ عليهم، ودخل بلخ بالسيف، وتركها خاوية على عروشها. ثم فعل مثل ذلك في ترمذ، فخربت، ولم تعمر بعد، ولكنها بنيت مدينة على ميلين منها هي التي تسمى اليوم ترمذ. وقتل أهل الياميان (الباميان) وهدمها بأسرها إلا صومعة جامعها، وعفا عن أهل بخارى وسمرقند.1
