“ولعرفة ثلاث أسماء، وهي، عرفة وجمع والمشعر الحرام، وعرفات بسيط من الأرض فسيح أفيح، تحدق به جبال كثيرة. وفي آخر بسيط عرفات جبل الرّحمة، وفيه الموقف، وفيما حوله، والعلمان قبله بنحو ميل، وهما الحد ما بين الحل والحرم. وبمقربة منهما مما يلي عرفة بطن عرنة الذي أمر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بالارتفاع عنه، ويجب التحفظ منه، ويجب أيضا الإمساك عن النّفور حتى يتمكن سقوط الشمس. فإن الجمّالين، ربّما استحثوا كثيرا من الناس، وحذّروهم الزحام في النّفر، واستدرجوهم إلى أن يصلوا بهم بطن عرنة، فيبطل حجهم.#” 4
