Maʿarrat al-Nuʿmān — ܡܥܪܝܐ ܢܥܡܢ

Maʿarrat al-Nuʿmān, famous as the birthplace of the blind poet al-Maʿarrī [q.v.], is situated at about 500 m. altitude, in lat. 35° 38′ N. and long. 36° 40′ E. Falling within northern Phoenicia, two days’ journey to the south of Ḥalab or Aleppo (70 km.), it is situated on the eastern fringe of a massif rich in archaeological remains.7

ثم سافرت إلى مدينة المعرّة، التي ينسب اليها الشاعر أبو العلاء المعري، وكثير سواه من الشعراء. قال ابن جزي: وإنما سميت بمعرة النعمان لأن النعمان بن بشير الأنصاري صاحب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم توفي له ولد أيام إمارته على حمص، فدفنه بالمعرة، فعرفت به. وكانت قبل ذلك تسمى ذات القصور. وقيل إن النعمان جبل مطلّ عليها سميت به.6
