[A] town in Arabia to the south-east of Mecca which in the early days of Islam belonged to the T̲h̲aḳīf [...] tribe. Today it is the fourth largest town in Saudi Arabia, located at a road junction on the way from Mecca to al-Riyāḍ [...].4

وأهل الطائف يأتونه بالفواكه. ومن عادتهم أن كل من له بستان من النخيل والعنب والفرسك وهو الخوخ والتين وهم يسمونه الخمط يخرج منه العشر لهذا الرباط. ويوصلون ذلك إليه على جمالهم ومسيرة ما بين مكة والطائف يومان. ومن لم يف بذلك نقصت فواكهه في السنة الآتية وأصابتها الجوائح.8
وعلى هذه الجبّانة طريق الصاعد إلى عرفات وطريق الذاهب إلى الطائف وإلى العراق.7
وكل ما يفترق في البلاد من السلع، فيها اجتماعه. وتجلب لها الفواكه والخضر من الطائف ووادي نخلة وبطن مرّ، لطفا من الله بسكان حرمه الأمين ومجاوري بيته العتيق.6
