A region of southern Syria bounded to the east by the volcanic massif of the D̲j̲abal al-Durūz, to the north by the plateau of the Lad̲j̲āʾ and the Damascus plain, to the west by D̲j̲awlān [q.v.] and to the south by the Yarmūk, a region which | corresponds roughly to the administrative area, or liwāʾ , of the same name and which extends for about 100 kilometres from north to south and 75 from east to west.9
